Zusammenfassung: This research focuses on the wall and vault paintings, dated to 1474/75, in the cloister of the former Augustine-monastery of Saint Elisabeth, Memmingen. The wall paintings were exposed in 1922 and restored in two subsequent campaigns. The condition of the paintings is characterised by numerous areas of detachment, losses in the plaster support as well as high concentrations of soluble salts. The deterioration of the paintings is primarily a result of the action of hydroscopic salts, a significant concentration of calciumcarbonat and gypsum in upper layers of the paintings. In addition, the use of the strongly contracting casein coatings as a fixative in previous restorations has contributed to the deterioration of the paintings. A concept has been developed based on investigations and analysis to re-establish a porous support. The strategy was developed following treatment trials on samples using a variety of materials and methods, and finally a sample area of the painting. Practical aspects of the required conservation treatments have been carried out in a sample area of the painting. Remarks for preservation of the wall paintings conclude this thesis.
