Zusammenfassung: The problem of damaged nickel and chromium coatings is well known in the restoration field. Due to their role that is often underestimated, potential methods of preservation of these coating materials have not yet been studied exhaustively. This paper focuses on nickel and chromium coated components of a historical automobile, a „Wnderer W 10/II“ built in 1928. This automobile consist of approximately 40 nickel and chromium coated subassemblies which, when disassembled, comprise a great number of individual parts.
In a number of scientific studies coating and base materials were identified and attemps were made to identify their processes of manufacture. Based on the identified states, studies and conceptual considerations restoration measures, especially supplementary option, were determined. Supplementary measures should preferably be based on leaf metal coating representing an effective alternative to „re-electroplating“, the method most commonly used at present.
The auotmobile will possibly be shown in the exhibition halls of the vehicle collection of the „Auto-Union GmbH“. The restoration and preservation measures for the nickel and chromium coated components are of great importance to the automobile’s general state that has to be upgraded for exhibition purposes.
