Based on an evaluation of the most common sewing techniques used in textile conservation, a support fabric in combination with couching stitches was chosen and used in the conservation and restoration of a three-dimensional costume. The badly damaged and torn man’s coat, dated around 1790 is in possession of the collections of the University of Applied Arts Vienna. A general overview of the man’s coat in costume history emphasizes the particularities of this specific object and formally positions it between Justaucorp and tailcoat. In context of the conservation of the coat, the possible options of storage and presentation of costumes in general are being discussed.
