Zusammenfassung: The visual appearance of the Canvas painting “Neptun und Amphitrite” by Ferdinand Bol was disturbed by numerous deformations, old tears and poorly integrated losses within the canvas support, which marked through fillings and retouches. Moreover the original format of the painting had been altered to a rococo shape that was later add ended to a rectangular format. This brought about the overpainting of large intact paint areas. This diploma focuses on the conception and realisation of the extensive conservation and restoration, including the removal of varnish and overpainting and the treatment of canvas damages. The exposure of the original paint and altered rococo format implied the consideration
of how to present the fragmented canvas painting. Various possibilities are discussed in the paper. The theoretical part attends to the reconstruction of the original painting format.
