Zusammenfassung: Black seal cords are due to their dyeing process with iron compounds and tannin - containing extracts of plants often damaged so badly, that great parts of the cords are completely decayed. Even by careful handling further losses are caused. Six objects with black seal cords made of silk were examined. To prevent these silk cords from further decay, six different consolidants, among them a complexing agent and an antioxidant in a binding media, were chosen and applicated to test cords by brush. The evaluation followed by means of mechanical and chemical tests as well as by optical and haptic investigation. It was proved, that a good consolidation could be reached with a mixture of the Lascaux Acrylic Resins 360 HV and 498 HV. The consolidation of one of the seal cords with the acrylic solution was realized and the proceeding was described. The thesis concludes with proposals about the secure storage of documents with seal cords.
