Zusammenfassung: The 1 x 2 m oilpainting on landscape canvas is presumably an original component of the Holy Sepulchre in Grauhof, which dates back to 1735.
Art-historical considerations and a comprehensive technical analysis provide evidence to support this theory, as well as aiding research into the painting's present state of damage. The extent of the damage to the textile support, to which a layer of oil paint was applied on the reverse side during a previous treatment, is particularly problematic. Accordingly, a treatment strategy has been devised using surface area samples, with the main emphasis being on the object's conservation.
Using the reconstructed original position of the painting in the entombment scene it was possibly to determine a suitable means of displaying the painting and thus the possibility of reincorporating the Holy Sepulchre into future Easter mass.
