Zusammenfassung: | The present study contributes to the reconstruction of the architectural development of the Late Ptolemaic/Roman tempel of Athribis at Sohag (Egypt) by focussing on the historical plasters/ mortars used during different building and reconstruction phases of the temple. The study analyses the composition of plasters/mortars primarily used as plasters and repair mortars or joined mortars, respectively. It establishes a catalogue of the existing plasters in unearthed parts of the building and their preservation status, and maps their distribution within the temple. Finally, a concept of conservation treatments has been developed for heavily disintegrated and salt-contaminated (NaCl) Egyptian gypsum mortars. A major and hitherto unknown result of the study is that lime plasters have been used with gypsum plasters during the same construction phases. |
