Zusammenfassung: | The subject of the Master thesis is a recently rediscovered Gothic painting, the “Epitaph of Barbara Steinlinger”, which was created in tempera technique on wall in the St. Sebaldus Church in Nuremberg in 1473. The painting was detached by the strappo method and transferred on canvas in 1904. From the original scene “Jesus carrying the cross” only one part, the unique view of Jerusalem, remains preserved. This thesis deals with the special iconography and the art historical environment as well as the history of the object. The medieval painting technique and the changes caused by the past restoration were investigated. Detachments of paintings are discussed not only specifically related to the subject but also in general. The study investigates the damages of the painting, caused by the transfer, the support and the influences of the location which resulted in a poor condition. The object was examined in consideration of the methods of the restoration of paintings on canvas as well as on wall. The result of this study is the development of a strategy for the conservation and restoration of the detached painting, which urgently demands to take necessary steps. Ethical and conversational arguments require the preservation of the painting on canvas as its support. |
