Zusammenfassung: The permanent exhibition of the National Museum of Ethnology Leiden, The Netherlands, currently comprises 3.000 objects from different cultural regions and is presented on two levels in the museum. In 2008 it was decided by the conservation department that the permanent collections should be reassessed using the Risk Assessment Methodology according to Stefan Michalski and Robert Waller. This was done in order to identify and to evaluate the problems and risks which are potentially or actually endangering the collections. First, the author conducted a context analysis during an internship. Based on the results, it was possible to continue with the examination of the permanent exhibition within the content of this Bachelor- Thesis. The thesis is divided into three sections. Firstly, the theory and methodology of Risk Assessment as developed by R. Waller and S. Michalski will be introduced. Secondly an overview of the most important results from the context analysis is given. The third and main part of the thesis will focus on the Risk Assessment Methodology applied to the permanent exhibition galleries of the National Museum of Ethnology, Leiden. This includes the identification, quantification and evaluation of specific risks. The goal of this thesis is, to illustrate the causes of risks, to discuss the correlations and to present the acquired results in order to provide information for future mitigation strategy planning.
