Zusammenfassung: | Family altars are objects from folk art, which are barley researched by now. This thesis shall analyse the history and meaning of the object as an artefact of private devotion by means of literature research and an interview with the owner of the altar. Through technological examinations of the production method, the wooden construction and the paint layers are analysed. Thereby, the first paint layer can be identified as a glazing white one with large amounts of zinc oxide and a differentiated surface structure which is compared to literature sources from the supposed time later on. Further, above the first paint layer are two (partial) over paintings. Based on the examinations the object can be dated to the second half of the 19th century. Because it is planned to display the altar in a museum in the future, the treatment concept deals with the preventive and active conservation as well as with the restoration and presentation. |
