Zusammenfassung: | This thesis looks at the work of different authors and their research on the subject of foxing spots on paper in order to identify possible procedures of identification and possible treatments on this subject. Its main goal is to provide a praxis oriented guide for restorators to give them the tools they need to deal with foxing spots. In order to understand the complex infestation with foxing and its causes, a comprehensive understanding of the composition of the material and the resulting processes during the discolouration is presented and possible treatments are shown. As a practical example, two objects with fox-spots are presented and analysed according to a selection of beforehand presented techniques. According to the literature, an identification should be carried out in situ. But an appropriate knowledge and investigation equipment is necessary. Such in-situ investigation methods are very useful in restoration, but require further research. Treatment methods involving the removal or reduction of the optical effect of foxing are possible. But they should be further investigated in terms of a careful treatment of the affected cultural heritage. Furthermore a greater emphasis should be placed on the early detection of causative factors of foxspots. |
