Zusammenfassung: | The much-altered antependium in appliqué technique from the end of the 16th century is made of velvet, lamé fabrics and metal threads. The art historical part of the diploma thesis deals with the evolution of antependia and the appliqué technique up to the Baroque era. Scientific examinations using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy as well as detailed mappings help to clarify which materials and technique were used in the altar frontal´s production and illustrate its current condition. The focus of the practical work lies on the reduction of wax stains, the way of dealing with alterations and the conservation of the fragile appliqué fabrics. Different stitched support methods have to be applied to treat the various degrees of the damage to the fabrics, the embroidery and the braid. These methods are tested on the object and carried out on a representative model area. |
