Zusammenfassung: | The thesis deals with an encased nativity scene from the 18th century which is kept at the Salzburg Museums collection. The main part of the project was the identification of a large variety of materials used to create this object (wood, paper, clay, glass, metal, textile, plants, snail shells, shells and corals) and the development and implementation of a conservation strategy. The results of this studies enabled a better understanding of the nativity scene`s construction resulting in tailor-made conservation measures. The treatment included removal of surface dirt, filling in areas of loss, stabilization of structural elements and consolidation of fragile areas in the wooden parts damaged by pest infestation. Materials which had been introduced during previous restorations were removed and damages of the water sensitive paint layer were retouched. The project concludes with a discussion of historical illumination of encased nativity scenes and possible implementations with modern materials. |
