Zusammenfassung: | Based on 17 selected sources from the early 17th century to the mid 19th century German leather dyeing recipes have been analysed. Natural colouring agents from plants and animals, pigments and synthetic agents provided the colour for leather dyeing processes. Within this period the, up to the industrial revolution, the leather dyeing process was manual work, being inextricably interwoven with tanning. The selection of colouring agents was influenced by the establishment of overseas trade routes in the 16th century, the changes brought by the enlightenment in the 18th century and the development in the wake of the industrial revolution in the early 19th century. A selection of recipes was tried to prove the correctness of the descriptions. |
