| Zusammenfassung: | Theme of this dissertation is the conservation of an amber crucifix from the collections of the Schlossmuseum Weimar/Klassik Stiftung Weimar. The object is a house‐altar, which was manufactured in the 17th century by an amberartist from Danzig. The materials used are a combination of amber, wood, silk, mica, ivory and brass and were manufactured precisely to a high quality and constitute a challenge for the conservation. The analysis of the object materials and inspection of the construction indicates the manufacture technology of the object and explains which steps should be taken. To support the concept experiments on the solubility of amber and a scientific treatise about adhesives for amber were made. A focal point of the conservation work is the ethical emphasis in the handling of old restauration and repairs. There are different adhesives, gap fillings, coatings on the object and later added elements of design. Further problems are the attack of mould, static difficulties and material damages to the amber, ranging from weathering, cracks and fractures to total losses. In this dissertation a concept for conserving the crucifix with focus on the amber material amber with consideration to the other materials used is elaborated and realized. |
