Zusammenfassung: The diploma thesis at hand deals with the conservation of a Naga head‐taker’s basket from
Northeast India. The artifact consists of a combination of various plant materials such as
bamboo, rattan, palm spathe and monocot leaves, as well as feathered bird skin and
cowries. The aim of this paper is the development of an appropriate conservation treatment
for the preservation of the head‐taker’s basket which has partly suffered extensive damage.
The diverse materials of the artifact are identified, an investigation of their condition is carried
out and the specific processes of deterioration are discussed.
The selection of appropriate methods for the cleaning and reshaping of the feathers is made
by experimental sequences and by an evaluation of literature.
A focal point of this paper is the development of a suitable treatment method for the
consolidation of the feathered bird skin, which is severely damaged by insect infestation.
