Zusammenfassung: The condition documentation of polychrome paint fragments on stone sculptures from antiquity
from the Glyptothek in Munich is the subject matter of this paper. Collected examination results
are clearly documented in a systematic manner in the form of a condition report submitted as
data sheets. Various examination methods as well as the terminology used in the data sheets
concerning material and damage types and the condition of the painted surfaces are presented.
Furthermore, this paper highlights the sensitive nature of painted stone surfaces. Therefore, the
dispute from the beginning of the 19th century about polychrome surfaces has been examined,
which has resulted in the discussion of the re‐discovery of colourings of antiquity. Both topics
support the comprehensive analysis of a case study.
The follow‐up examination of a fragment and its extensive documentation is presented in a
logical and progressive breakdown of the hierarchic structure in detailed subgroups. This
represents an additional important part of this paper.
