Zusammenfassung: The subject of this work is the investigation and state capture of the Erard‐frères single‐actionpedal
harp from the Couven museum of Aachen. In addition, her historical connection was lit up and the
instrument was compared to other Erard harps as well as to a harp from the late 18th century which
likewise is owned by the Couven museum. Virtually authentic strings are aimed to put on the harp
after completion of the works, not in order to get playable conditions. On basis of the investigations
a concept was found, concerning the preservation and restoration of the constructively stable
instrument, whose paint layers and relief decoration elements were reworked extensive and are
strongly damaged partly. The defective swell mechanism was restored, the original early high grade
revised varnish and gilding was exposed and treated, regarding the conservation and aesthetic
appearance of the harp. Purpose was to give a well‐tended appearance corresponding to the age of
the harp. For this newer materials were used like Urea‐aldehyde resin. The corrosion products of the
metal parts were reduced in a combined chemical‐mechanical procedure.
Within the scope of the certificate period some works were finished only half‐sided and are
continued in the connection by the author.
