Zusammenfassung: | The Nile mosaic of Palestrina is a unique portrayal of the life and wildlife in ancient Egypt. It highlights the prestigious character of the buildings in and the importance of the ancient city of Praeneste. After its discovery, the floor mosaic served as a representational work of art for the Italian noble family of the Barberini. Several reconstructions and restorations over the time illustrate the high regard for this mosaic as a work of art. One segment however became separated as a single piece, now at the Antikensammlung in Berlin, and received different treatments. This thesis describes the mosaic in Berlin, its historic background and past restorations. An analysis of the materials and its current condition help to determine the necessary measures to preserve and restore the object. In this context it is important to question how to deal with former restorations and how the mosaic should be exhibited. |
