Zusammenfassung: | This thesis deals with the collection of 23 canvas paintings in the vestment chamber of Melk Abbey in Lower Austria. Due to the art historical research, the majority of the artworks, most likely created around 1750, can be attributed to Joseph Grebmer († 1772). Scientific examination and instrumental diagnosis substantiate the assessment of the collection´s condition and the materials and techniques used by the artist. The obtained information is digitalised in a database. Environmental conditions in the vestment chamber were measured and improvements of the paintings´ presentation were suggested to minimalize the risk of further damage. Additionally, measures for the preservation of the paintings were implemented, i. a. dry surface cleaning and the improvement of the framing. Furthermore, a detailed concept for the conservation is developed. |
