Zusammenfassung: | The following master’s thesis deals with the stabilisation of microbially damaged parchment objects. The basic conditions in which microbial growth takes place on parchment are researched in detail and proven by a series of tests. It is tested which microorganisms, depending on the surrounding temperature and humidity, show growth on parchment. The period in which this growth takes place is precisely documented. In addition, the hygroscopicity of the material is examined so that precise moisture adsorption values and speed can be specified. By considering historical and current treatment methods to stabilize tears and fill in missing parts in parchment documents, a selection of possible methods for use on microbially weakened parchment can be made. A further series of tests shows how much moisture is brought into the material by the selected stabilization method and whether this amount is sufficient to reactivate the microbial infestation. Finally, clear recommendations can be given for the handling and treatment of microbially infested parchment. |
