Zusammenfassung: | Abstract Seal capsules serve as protection for seals on parchment documents. They should protect the seal from damage, as the document loses its legal validity without the seal. The seal capsules were mainly turned from wood, later made from metal and sometimes also from ivory. They mainly appeared in the 13th to 18th century and were then successively replaced by other protection systems. In this thesis, different forms of wooden seal capsules from Stadtarchiv Hildesheim are examined with regards to their external appearance, their manufacture and their condition, by taking into account the criteria for recording in wood conservation and restoration. These include a precise object description, a context analysis, as well investigations of the materials and surface finishes. Based on these, as well as a status mapping, a status assessment follows. As an introduction, the anatomy of wood, the criteria for recording wood conservation and restoration and the craft of turning are presented.
