Overview:

Abstract: The analysis of two lockers made of ash tree from the greater area around Braunschweig shall characterize the construction and design in detail. Continuing research will build an academic foundation for allocating peasant furniture to the region of Braunschweig. The further analysis of three other lockers shows many congruencies in design and construction. The assumption is further solidified that these congruencies are not only of regional character but can more over be associated to a certain carpenter's shop. The research of several archives resulted in the fact that the lockers may have been manufactured in the carpenter's shop of J.H.C Bornemann in Adenstedt.
A further focal point in this research has been about the ash tree itself as a wood species: It describes important characteristics and the natural dispersal of fraxinus excelsior L. Conclusively, the ash tree is a very appropriate wood species for manufacturing furniture. The feasibility of a dendrochronolical age specification of art objects in general is possible with the help of the German Archeological Institute in Berlin.
