Abstract: The paper is about the good shepherd which is made of Savonnières limestone. This material is also used at the Cathedral in Cologne and other famous buildings. The sculpture is located in the Melaten Cemetery in Cologne, corridor HWG OW, No. 326-327. The major task was a detailed documentation and analysis of the condition of the sculpture with different established methods. A mapping was carried out and a catalogue of the various weathering forms was drawn up. The sculptures drilling resistance was measured, ultrasonic analyses were applied, and the sculpture`s behavior concerning water absorption was examined. Also the sculpture`s petrography forms part of this paper. Furthermore the consolidation of decomposing areas as well as different application forms of protective washes based on ethyl silicate were examined on test bodies.
