Overview:

Abstract: This paper deals with the investigation and the initial conservation treatment of the ‘Descent from the Cross’ retable (1854-56) by August Wilhelm Julius Ahlborn. The wooden, gilded retable construction includes 14 canvas paintings. The portraits of saints and scenes from the life of Christ are copies of paintings by Fra Angelico. Some paintings suffer from serious damage in the textile supports and paint layers due to inappropriate storage conditions. The fact, that the retable has never had any conservation treatments in the past, was well considered during the conservation concept development. The main measures for the preservation of the art object such as the levelling of deformations, tear mending and inserts as well as the consolidation of flaking paint were carried out on a test area.
