Abstract: The examples investigated and documented for this diploma dissertation, as well as those published in the relevant literature, demonstrate how much information is contained in the mineral-preserved organic remains on archaeological metal objects. Though a few general guidelines for the preliminary treatment could be extracted from the discussion with conservators, no patent remedies can be given for conservation and restoration treatments of metal objects concreted with organic remains. Only close cooperation among all involved experts (excavator, finds specialist, conservator) guarantees the best possible results in identifying and interpreting the organic remains. The application of consolidants and surface lacquers must be weighed. For microscopic examination, mineral-preserved organic remains should not be treated with consolidants. On the other hand, a conservation treatment is necessary for further preservation of these remains. The specialization of archaeological conservators in the examination and identification of organic remains might encourage the investigation of more than only the extraordinary finds complexes.
