Abstract: Current thesis deals with the drawbacks and opportunities of retroactive stabilization of contemporary natural rubber works of art. Two substances are applied to the material: Irganox™ 565 solved in 2-Propanon and Irganox™ 1520 solved in 2-Propanol, the latter additionally emulsified in distilled water. The migration of antioxidants into photooxidative degraded natural rubber samples is verified with Fourier-Transform-Infrared- Spectroscopy (FTIR). The effect of delayed oxidation is demonstrated by means of the Oxidation-Induction-Temperature (OIT*). The documentation of changes in the material’s surface is made by both, Light Optical (LOM) and Scanning-Electron-Microscopy (SEM). Methods developed by artists to stabilize natural rubber works of art are mentioned in this thesis. Formulations have also been developed to guarantee a preventive stabilisation during the creation.
