Paul Michael Kostial: Reconstruction and conservation of a musical long case clock made by Roentgen and Langerhans – options for an appropriate presentation in museum collections back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: While taking care of technical objects whose function is important for the obcjects characters, the
conservator often works in an area of conflicts. A conservation treatment – on the one hand – is justifiable
relating to conservation ethics but mostly it is not sufficient for setting these objects in function again.
Hence an essential part of the object will be missing in the presentation. To achieve an object in fully
working condition – on the other hand – repairings have to be done which exceed conservation work. A long
case clock with complex musical work will serve as an example to illustrate a possible way for striking a
balance between conservation ethics and a presentation adequate to the nature of the mechanical object.
