Abstract: | The aim of this study was to select a suitable silicic acid ester (SAE) consolidator for the restoration of brick doorway portals at the St. Jakobi church in Perleberg, Germany. Four SAE based consolidation materials were tested on both bore samples and specimens formed from representative loose pulverized brick material. Strength, deformation and material pore properties were measured both before and after the consolidation trials. Funcosil 300 (Remmers) demonstrated the best overall performance in the laboratory, and was therefore selected for on-site evaluation on two test areas on the doorway portals of the St. Jakobi church. Additional longer-term evaluations (i.e. extending through winter) on a greater surface area of brick should follow. |
