Maria Bortfeldt: Emulsion transfer, a conservation method for cellulose nitrate- and cellulose acetate negatives back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Surveys in Archives have shown that acetate negative collections are partly threatened from massive deterioration. In advanced degradation stages the information cannot be retrieved by simply duplicating the films because image disturbances like distortion, wrinkles and bubbles are shown in the copy. In this thesis a conservation treatment is developed further that is based on separating the image layer from the degraded support, flattening it and keeping it separately. Large negative collections can be treated this way. So far published procedures are tested and modified so that they can be applied optimal; it is also examined which methods do not harm the image layer. The procedure can (within limits) also be employed to preserve instable nitrate negatives.
