Overview:

Abstract: We performed an examination of the church of St. Salvator in Kallstadt/ Weinstraße, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate/ Germany, with particular attention to the medieval choir located on the tower's ground floor. The choir was separated from the rest of the church at the end of the 19th Century, and is no longer in use for religious functions. In this paper we present a global preservation concept for the choir. The concept, based on a scientific analysis of the different decoration phases and of the amount of destruction due to weathering and arbitrary interventions, focuses on measures for the preservation of endangered building materials. The required conservation steps, in particular the consolidation of chalking and exfoliating paint layers, are presented in the applied section. Additional preservation activities are proposed in an aesthetic presentation ofthe former choir.
