The steps of the wooden newel stair leading to the attic of the aisle of St. Martins Church in Oberwesel partly consist of fragments of an organ and a painted cycle of Christ’s passion. Obviously, the famous “Kleine Holzschnittpassion” by Albrecht Dürer has been used as a draft for the illustration of these panels. Fur-thermore, the organ-fragments have been laminated with ancient paper docu-ments, which in their original function served as wind seals within the converted components. On the basis of a detailed examination - including constructional, (art-)technical and (art-)historical conditions - important conclusions concerning the age deter-mination of the stairway and its fragments have been formulated. The paper also comes up with assumptions in terms of the original context in which the cycle of paintings was presented in. Furthermore, the formulation of a broad concept in order to enable further measures regarding the conservation of the staircase has been carried out.
