Abstract: | The tomb of the Deller family at the old cemetery in Lindau-Aeschach (Lake Constance) is an example of evangelical burial culture from the epoch at the turn of the century of 1600. Analysis of the stability and condition of the natural stone (Rorschach molasse sandstone) and the polychrome painting of this stele, only the upper part of which is now painted, provides the basis for investigation of the causes of the ongoing weathering mechanisms in the stone and in the painting. Taking account of the local conditions, characterised by high stresses due to humidity and salt, of this tomb transferred to the cemetery chapel at the beginning of the 20th century, conservation programmes are divised for the natural stone and the mounting and are partially tested on sample surfaces of the object. The main emphasis of the conservation measures is placed in this case on treatment of one of the main symptoms of damage of Rorschach sandstone, which manifests itself in planiform detachment of the uppermost layer of stone (contour scaling). For this purpose, the physical properties of various different silica gel-based injection mortars were established during laboratory tests on test pieces and the mortars best adapted to the properties of the stone were analysed under insitu conditions. |
