Abstract: | On Sgraffito-artworks weathering often induces a loss of the superficial substance, leading to a strong adverse effect on its appearance. Possible restorational ways in dealing with aged two-layer Sgraffiti, especially the rear coated plaster, are shown. Next to theoretical fundamentals in technology and history of the Sgraffito-technique, an exemplary compilation of historical and recent restaurations are given. These provide an overview of practiced methods, that were used in particular to recover readability. Practical tests are performed to restore the coloration of formerly black-pigmented rear coated plasters as well as a review of various coating systems regarding their optical properties and weatherability. Applications with silicate-chalk and plain pigment (each fixated with silicic acid esters) achieved best results, while the inspected plaster slurries prove hardly suitable, whereas the use of whitewash is entirely inappropriate. |
