Abstract: | Numerous monuments and cultural relics are covered by lichens. Stone objects are getting some value over time through these colorful patterns but can be damaged too through growing symbiosis of fungi and algae or cyanobacteria. Lichens are even hindering measures for conservation. Different cleaning methods were carried out to remove lichens from sandstones. The residues of organic material and its influence on stone surfaces have been investigated under consideration of the effect of different cleaning methods and this forms the basis for discussion on how to deal with the preservation of monuments colonised by lichens. |
