Abstract: | The reliquary had to be conserved and restored for liturgical use. The original materials included fire-gilt silver, filigree silver, semi-precious and glass stones as well as fire-gilt Niello plaques. After consolidation of the original body, suitable underlay constructions of silver sheets made of identical alloy with galvanic application of gold were attached on selected areas and by inserting new wooden cores. The original body was partially reshaped using different steel and wooden tools. To enable its use for the liturgical purposes, parts of the filigree, stone settings and the small reliquary capsule had to be reconstructed. Historical techniques and adaptations of original designs were used to recreate these elements without aiming at imitating the Gothic master’s hand. |
