Overview:

Abstract: The object “Ste 133” is a polychromatic mosaic consisting of stone segments, made by Georg Christian Franck in 1770. The mosaic provides the basis for an examination that includes macros- and microscopic observations.
All parts of the mosaic are examined with reflected light, sidelight microscopy and UV excitation. Furthermore, photographs and mappings of exemplary features of the mosaic, as well as a rock identification, are being performed. Used glues and putty are also addressed in a chemical analysis.
Finally, the results of the laboratory analyses lead to a conservation concept. This includes the cleaning of the objects surface, the relocation of the mosaic segments as well as the replacing of missing parts.
