Overview:

Abstract: The diploma thesis deals with the conservation of a malangan mask, now in the possession of the Weltmuseum Wien. The object is a dance mask from New Ireland, which was collected between 1893-1895. The artifact was made of typical indigenous plant materials, which makes their identification a particular challenge.
The low amount of binder concentration, natural deterioration processes and improper handling caused various damages and distortion.
The conservation treatment concentrates on conservation treatments to clean and stabilize the artifact and to prevent further damage and material loss. These measures ensure a following safe storage and display of the artifact.
