Lisa Verena Franken: Investigations of reasons and possibilities of stabilising of semi-drying oil paint in contemporary art back

Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: This master thesis deals with the phenomenon of semidrying oil paint and liquefaction processes in
contemporary oil paintings. It aims to achieve a deeper understanding of the complex processes and to
show important characteristics of drying defects. Investigations and analysis of affected artworks including
paintings by Jonathan Meese were carried out. The liquefaction of oil paint is primarily dependent on the
paint’s composition – especially the type of oil – as well as the artist’s manner of working with this material.
The main emphasis of this investigation is to examine and evaluate different treatment strategies for the
subsequent curing of weeping oil paint. A heat treatment that revealed promising success for post-curing is
applied on a painting and evaluated in regard to ist practical suitability as well as ethical considerations.
