Overview:

Abstract: This Master thesis deals with the examination and conservation/restoration of an anthropoid wooden coffin
from Abusir el-Meleq which is dated approx. 600-750 B.C. It is in ownership of the Heinrich Schliemann-
Institute of Rostock University. The support is made out of wood, the outside presents itself with colourful
decorations and hieroglyphics on a white preparation. The eyes had been made by an inlay of obsidian and
marble. A resin had been locally applied assumedly in the context of a ritual. Restoration activities in the
early 20th century resulted in inappropriate condition. The overall aim of the conservation was to secure the
ancient materials and to create a stable condition for the exhibition. Main task was the development of
injectable gap filler for the gap between the wooden support and the textile intelaggio. The paint layers had
to be fixed and cleaned. The cleaning was performed with a laser. Former restoration materials were
removed as far as possible.
