| Abstract: | Subject of this Master-Thesis is a delicate Chinese headdress with so-called Kingfisher Feather Cloisonné from the collection of the Stiftung Schloss Friedenstein in Gotha. The object is an original unique piece, which received only few attention prior to the start of this thesis. Since there were almost no detailed information about the small hair accessories available, extensive art-historical and technological studies were performed first. Using the knowledge of these detailed studies, the object, which was previously stored under the name "Kopfschmuck eines malaiischen Fürsten", could be identified as Chinese Kingfisher Feather jewellery. In accordance with these fresh insights, the work also sheds lights on this unique form of Chinese arts and crafts. Based on the object-specific signs of damage, the work deals with the creation of a suitable conservation and restoration concept, and optimised storage-facilities for the object. Here the focus lies on the used combination of organic and inorganic materials and the related problems in the conservation and restoration of the object. For this reason, a detailed discussion about the customary methods for the restoration of each single material was performed. Since they are the most sensitive element, the focus lies on the feathers which were used for the cloisonné. Finally, first series of tests to select the appropriate methods for the subsequent restoration of the property have been conducted. |
