Abstract: This thesis contains the development of a conservation and restauration concept for the concave cornice and the vault painting “apotheosis of Hercules” of Johann Heinrich Ritter (about 1732) of room 313 at the residence castle Altenburg with special regard to the destructive magnesium sulphate salts. The approach was achieved by the direct application of bariumhydroxide, which transforms readily soluble sulphate salts in slightly soluble and therefore passivated sulphate salts.
