Abstract: | With the help of stylistic and technological examination of the altar‐clock, it has been revealed as a pastiche dating to the late 17th century with numerous late 19th century additions to its surface decoration. Based on the examination of its state of preservation a conservation strategy has been developed and a representative treatment was carried out on a selected part of the clock. Different coatings commonly used in conservation practice were tested and evaluated in view of their proper way of application, permeability to hydrogen sulphide, film hardness, adhesion and their optical properties. |
