A view into vehicle‐museums and private restoration hobby shows a tendency to perfectly finished
objects. Old repairs are mostly removed.
A certain appreciation is given to them in museums for technical heritage and social history. Marks of
oldness and use are considered in case of conservation.
The Jaray‐Sesselrad (“chair‐bicycle”) of the Landesmuseum für Technik und Arbeit in Mannheim is an
example for different qualities of old repairs and their content of information. Therefore a concept of
conservation was developed that preserve old repairs.
The Jaray‐Sesselrad is a special bicycle from the early 1920s. It contains a drive with steel‐wires and
pedal‐levers and an upholstered comfortable seat with a small chair‐back.
