Abstract: | On wax‐covers of medieval altar relics there was found a lamella–like restructuring. So far this type of damage of aged beeswax was reported only for wax seals. Gas chromatography as well as mass spectroscopy were used to investigate the cause of the destruction of nine relics. All samples showed a loss of light paraffin and wax esters. Experiments on reconstructing the medieval processing and comparing microscopic investigations of medieval wax samples showed, that the processing of the wax plays an important role for the later restructuring. Further experiments on different conservation methods have been carried out. Polyethylenglykol (PEG) 6000 and propolis, the natural bee glue, have been chosen for the consolidation purposes. Polyethylenglykol (PEG) 6000 could be shown to be best suited for gluing parts of wax. |
