Abstract: Thanks to the identification of the donor family as a result of the art‐scientific investigation, the
wooden epitaph which has been forgotten for a long time could be clearly combined with the history
of the town and region of Bad Salzungen. This finding is the basis for public interest and therefore an
important motivation for future conservation measurements. Apart from scientific‐technical and
regional‐historic monument valuation criteria, the epitaph has gained an artistic‐regional importance
not known till now due to the quality of two panel paintings which are integrated in the frame. The
possibilities of a rationalised restoration which have been elaborated within the restoration concept
have been realised and controlled as an example by suitable measurements and technologies of the
field of conservation and restoration.
