Abstract: | The Epitaph of Günther XLI. von Schwarzburg and his wife Katharina, born as the countess of Nassau, in the church „Liebfrauenkirche“ in Arnstadt was built in the year 1590. It consists of several different stone materials like sandstone, anhydrid and alabaster. The Epitaph is polychrome painted. In the Year 1885 there happened an extensive measure of restoration of the epitaph. The epitaph got a new polychrome painting. During the diploma thesis was taken an analysis of conditions of the epitaph. It means the complete epitaph with its history, the materials, the damages and the reasons for it and the investigation of the polychrome painting. The most extensive damages are the green discoloration, the loss of the hammered metal plating and the damaged mortar. An essential reason for these damages was the measure of restoration in the year 1958. In this time the whole room setting was removed whit the so‐called „Zwingerpaste“. A concept of measures to preserve and restore for the whole epitaph was developed. The concept based on the measures of the test area. In this test area at the epitaph was taken surface cleaning of the non polychromed stone and the polychromed stone, additions, closing the joints, the retouching of the defects in the polychrome painting, special the hammered metal plating and a new wax‐coat on the non polychromed stone. |
