Abstract: | Since 1969 Silvestras and some other marionettes from 1934 created by the artist Stasys Ušinskas are in the possession and where shown by the Lithuanian Museum of Theater, Music and Cinema in Vilnius. Different mechanical damages and the natural aging of individual constituents endangered the preservation of the figure Silvestras and demanded a conservation and restoration. The puppet’s body is made of different materials which are wood, paperboard and papier – mâché, textile, leather, steel‐, lead‐ and zinc alloys, glass and plastics; some of them partly coloured. A coating of crumbled and powdered casein colour on textile was consolidated and cracks in the fabrics where closed. Two separated fragments of the head where attached. Different sized holes and cracks in the papier – mâché and in the fingers out of rubber where closed. Corrosion layers on the metal parts where thinned out before the application of a protective coating. For returning the object into the early exhibition, suggestions for adequate environmental conditions were made. |
