Abstract: A concept juxtaposing the ideas of a historical‐political monument and a “museum
castle” is sought for the cultural heritage preservation of the “Schönhausen” Castle.
Representation of the various eras of the castle’s history requires, in the particular case
of the marble gallery, that this room is brought back to its original rococo condition.
The aim of this thesis is to develop techniques to uncover the stucco marble and
decoration and to evaluate their aesthetic, conservation and cultural heritage
preservation advantages and disadvantages. The main focus is the testing of
mechanical, thermal and chemical uncovering procedures, while ensuring preservation
of the vulnerable stucco. This requires thorough building/construction research and
investigation of the various coating layers. The main result shows, that all
requirements confirm a presentation of the original rococo condition. The Tests
affords the opportunity to develop a technique to uncover in combining chemical and
mechanical procedures.
