Overview:

Abstract: Theme of this dissertation is the analysis, conservation and restoration as well as a new presentation
of the “Bremer Spangenhelm” from the permanent exhibition of the “Bremer Landesmuseum für
Kunst und Kulturgut”.
The object is an iron helmet ( Bandspangenhelm) and there is no direct resemblance to other
helmets. The helmet was found in 1925 in the “Balge” an old branch of the Weser. The appearance
of the helmet is because of the thorns and his jagged revolving metal band very unusual. Some
important questions regarding the composition of the materials with the help of extensive natural
scientific and cultural‐historical research could be answered within the scope of this dissertation. On
account of different methods of analysis a tin‐plating of the iron surface and organic remains within
the interior of the helmet were discovered.
The paper contains also research on the history of objects and restoration. Through projection the
helmet was measured. With the data, the method of CNC‐milling and afterwards deep‐drawing of
Plexiglas to close the defective parts of the helmet for visual effects, an inner construction was made
that fits perfectly. Afterwards the helmet will be presented in the permanent exhibition of the Focke‐
Museum again.
